How to Choose the Best Candidate for a Job or Business

Here are a few tips that can help make the process of finding the right team member easier.

Most business owners would agree when we say that the hiring the best employees is not a walk in the park. Companies have to go through a whole process of evaluating people based on their skills, work ethic and personality, to determine who is the perfect fit.

It’s almost like a single person’s journey to finding their partner for life. But unlike this romantic quest, recruitment, engagement and ultimately employment can become an easier, less tricky process.

Here are 5 tips that can help you choose the best candidate for a job that your business needs.

Start with the job description

Everything begins with knowing what exactly you need for the job. It’s important that you know why you’re hiring for that particular position in the first place. The scope of what the job entails should be discussed, agreed upon and outlined before the recruitment process begins. It pays to be straight to the point and forward, and be as detailed as possible, so that you attract the right kind of candidates.

Seek help from other colleagues

When looking through resumes and cover letters, it would be best to ask input from the team that the applicant will be joining in. They know what it takes to get the job done, and what kind of person will suit best.

Formulate the winning interview questions

When listing down possible questions to ask, why not include out-of-the-ordinary questions in your mix? Besides the typical interview queries, maybe ask the applicant about what motivates them, or their attitude and work ethic, maybe get them to talk about something in their personal life which could help you get a sense of who they are as a person.

Don’t fall for charisma

It’s easy to be impressed by a well-written resume and an eloquent candidate. Sometimes the most charming of the bunch will not be the right person for the job. Make sure to be thorough in the selection of candidates, and consider all the person’s qualifications before making the decision.

Keep trying

Don’t be discouraged when you haven’t found the perfect match, even if it seems like you have interviewed the whole neighborhood. Go over your job ad and see where it could be improved to attract more applicants. Maybe you need to revise your exam and interview questions. A few changes and improvements could go a long way into finding the best candidate for the job.

The recruitment process is one of the toughest and sometimes longest processes that a business has to go through in order to gather a company’s most prized capital: the right people.
